In the 1960s, the New Plymouth Power Station was originally designed to run on coal, but was built to run on natural gas or fuel oil. New Plymouth has been awarded the most livable city (for a population between 75,000 and 150,000) by the International Awards for Liveable Communities in 2021. Powerco operates the city's local natural gas and electricity distribution network. New Plymouth is the principal town in the Taranaki region on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island. Electricity is supplied by Transpower's national grid at two substations: Carrington Street (Brooklands) and Huirangi. The first commercial oil was obtained in January 1866. Companies began searching for oil on the New Plymouth coast in 1865 after small and thick oil deposits were discovered on the coast. There are schools in Fitzroy, Frankleigh Park, Hurdon, Lynmouth, Mangorei, Marfell, Merrilands, Moturoa, Spotswood, Strandon, Vogeltown, Welbourn, Westown and Brooklands. Exploration continued sporadically and a refinery was opened in 1913.
