The Governor-General's residence, Government House (the current building was completed in 1910) is located in Newtown, across from the Basin Reserve. At the time, Wellington's population was only 4,900. Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand. Whitireia New Zealand has major campuses in Porirua, Wellington and Kapiti; Wellington Institute of Technology and New Zealand's National School of Drama, Toi Whakaari. A formal session of parliament met for the first time in the capital on July 26, 1865. The greater Wellington metropolitan area, which includes the towns of Lower Hutt, Porirua and Upper Hutt, had a population of 434,900 as of June 2022.
